SAM_7541.JPGActually did some work in my own garden this weekend! It has been somewhat neglected this winter. After spending most of the week being cold in other people’s gardens I haven’t been tempted into my own except the twice daily walk to the chicken run at the end of the garden. I had a bash at the front over Christmas but no-one sees the back.

My polytunnel blew away in the autumn and the remants of the chlli and tomato plants were still sitting there so they had to go. The brussel sprout plants were covered in aphids and had no sign of sprouts so l have given up much to the delight of the  chickens. The rest of it was general weeding and seeing what was coming up.

I love these tete-a-tetes I buy them from tesco to have on the windowsill then plant them in the garden after they have finished. I have made quite a collection over the years and I always plant them where I am going to pass them every day.

The month so far has been mostly cold! There are signs that spring is coming but it’s still chilly out there. The drifts of snowdrops are being joined by the first few daffodils and lovely Muscari. The birds are singing and I think that there is at least one robin following me in each garden I go to.

I have been pruning roses this week, this is the rose garden ‘before’

Well I hope that you can see the difference!

Lastly I have a really good crop of salad leaves in the greenhouse and I have sown the first seeds, beetroot.

Vegetables

I grow vegetables for two families as well as in my own garden. Last year my Tuesday garden was a disaster as a rabbit took up residence in the veg plot. The beans never recovered from being chomped and salad was a non-starter. What did grow were lots of squashes, cucumbers and beetroot so at least I know what rabbits don’t like to eat!

In the autumn, once the beds were dug I planted onion sets and garlic. In the greenhouse I started broad beans, peas and sweet peas. These did so well they had to be pinched out and moved outside. And now, well just look:

In the greenhouse the mixed salad leaves, also sown in the autumn, are ready for a small harvest and fennel seedlings have been pricked out.

I can’t wait to start on all the summer vegetables but I am restraining myself as it could be cold for a while yet and I only have so much windowsill space.
