It’s that time of year again, I should have been expecting it, when I turn up on a Monday morning and find only stalks in the veg garden.

Radishes, fennel, cabbage, chives, beetroot all eaten, not to mention the coriander in the greenhouse! Last year it was the beans, every single one when they had been doing so well, and they never recovered, so this year it has been a wake up call to finish the rabbit fencing and tonight I have shut the greenhouse door!

I have a rabbit problem in the main borders too, a big hole under a rose bush, which I filled in last week, has been re-excavated. Why can’t rabbits eat ground elder?

On a more positive note, most things in the greenhouse are just coming up and safely out of reach on the potting bench and I have time to re-sow.  The seeds that I put in the ground have yet to appear, it was probably a bit early, I had hoped that it would be a bit warmer by now!

These came in the post, very excited to see how they turn out. Snow forecast for the morning!!! Thermals are go!

Autumn sown peas in flower

I started my day  at the pub, but more about that another time! When I finally got to my Tuesday garden, it was still raining so I was relieved that it was the one garden I do with a greenhouse and settled down with a big box of seeds.

Had a good session of seed sowing, peas, beans, nasturtium, cucumber, and probably something else, inside and chard, radish and spinach outside. Also pricked out some hyssop and chives seedlings which are doing well.

The onions, also planted as sets in the autumn, are also looking good.

After lunch, it brightened up so I went out to admire the tulips. They do much better on one side of the garden than the other so rethink is in order for next year.

It’s happened!  I’ve been away a week and spring has arrived with a whoosh. The orchard is a proper carpet of yellow, the tulips have started to flower and the hardy geraniums are getting too big to move. Even better, the damson tree is covered with blossom so fingers crossed for frost free nights.

And the Fritillaria imperialis are finally in flower too, I have been watching them slowly emerge for a good month now. I have cleared nettles round a whole load that have appeared along the bank of a neglected pond.

Not much happening in the veg plot, all the seed trays had dried out and I have to judge whether to leave the greenhouse open or closed for a week until I am back again. Oh yes, the autumn sown peas and broad beans are in flower, yay, will sow some more next week outside if I am feeling brave.
